Overview

Redesigned the mobile app for The Triumphant Baptist Church to solve operational bottlenecks, establish brand alignment, and expand core features. The solution introduced autonomous content management, cohesive visual identity, and new engagement tools including prayer requests and sermon access.

Understanding the Problem

Operational Challenge: The church lacked direct control over content management. Reliance on an unresponsive third party to handle devotional uploads created delays and bottlenecks, preventing the church from independently managing their digital presence.

Brand Identity Gap: The existing app didn't reflect the church's visual identity or modern approach. Inconsistent design elements (colors, fonts, styling) made the app feel disconnected from the church's real-world brand experience.

Limited Functionality: The app was feature-limited, lacking essential tools the congregation neded, such as prayer request submission, sermon access, and other community engagement features.

Design Process and Methodology

1.

Discovery & Requirements Gathering

Gathered detailed requirements from organizational stakeholders to understand operational challenges and priorities. Synthesized the church's pain points across current systems and documented functional requirements necessary to address identified gaps.

2.

Feature Ideation & Value Proposition Development

Brainstormed high-impact, value-driven features aligned with user needs. Proposed sermon library access, engagement streaks for devotional consistency, and prayer request functionality to deepen congregation engagement. Validated feature proposals and presented recommendations for approval.

3.

Design System & Visual Identity

Established a comprehensive design system aligned with the church's brand guidelines. Defined typography, color palette, component library, and interaction patterns to ensure consistency across all interfaces.

4.

Mobile App & Web Dashboard Design with Dual Theme Support

Designed two complementary interfaces for distinct user needs: a mobile app for congregation engagement (prayer requests, sermons, devotionals) and a web admin dashboard for autonomous content management. Both platforms include light and dark mode options to accommodate diverse user preferences and accessibility needs.

5.

Design Handoff

Delivered comprehensive design specifications and component documentation to the development team.

Key Design Decisions

Engagement Streaks Feature for Spiritual Consistency

I proposed and implemented an engagement streak system that tracks consecutive days of devotional engagement. This gamified approach encourages consistent spiritual practice while providing visual feedback to congregation members. The feature balances motivation with authentic spiritual growth, avoiding superficial metrics while fostering meaningful habit formation.

Giving Section for Accessibility

A giving section that provides easy access to the church's account details, allowing members to give anytime they choose. This removes the barrier of searching for donation information while keeping the church in control of their own financial processes.

Sermon Archive for Accessibility and Reflection

A searchable sermon library that extends the value of each message beyond a single broadcast, allowing members to engage with content on their own schedule and deepen their spiritual journey.

Prayer Request Feature for Community Connection

A prayer request system where members submit personal prayer needs visible to the pastor on the admin end. The pastor can reach out directly using user details if needed, creating a direct communication channel that deepens pastoral care and community support.

Learnings

Breaking conventions works when intentional. Red typically signals danger, but using it as a brand color for a faith app pushed my creativity and reinforced that design "rules" are guidelines, not absolutes. Context and thoughtful execution matter more than following conventions.
