Overview

Bobocoin is an individual trader of cryptocurrency and gift cards, operating as both a buyer and a seller depending on the needs of the user. The business built its reputation on WhatsApp, where trust and credibility made customers choose Bobocoin over large exchanges . However, relying on WhatsApp as the primary sales channel was inefficient: repetitive inquiries consumed hours of time, transactions required friction-filled chats, and the lack of a professional platform limited growth. The design challenge was to translate this trusted reputation into a branded, seamless digital experience that reduced operational burden and provided a structured environment where anyone could confidently buy or sell.

Research Insights

The necessary insights were gathered directly from the client to understand his operational challenges, as well as from a few of his customers to learn about their transaction experience. To broaden perspective, I also spoke with crypto and gift card users who were not yet Bobocoin’s customers. This helped uncover not only the inefficiencies in the WhatsApp-only model but also the expectations and trust barriers of potential first-time users.

However, some of the questions that came to mind when I was first given this project were:

Why would anyone want to purchase from an individual seller when exchanges like KuCoin, Binance, or gift card platforms already exist?

What makes existing customers keep returning to Bobocoin despite these alternatives?

How can we extend the trust that loyal customers already feel to strangers who are considering buying for the first time?

What information or reassurance do new buyers need to feel confident enough to transact?

How can repetitive tasks like price checks and availability confirmations be simplified for both the seller and customers?

User Pain-points

From these guiding questions and conversations, the following pain points became clear:

Client Pain Points (as both buyer and seller)

Spent too much time answering repetitive questions about pricing and availability.

No professional platform to showcase credibility beyond word of mouth

Difficulty maintaining professionalism and scaling beyond WhatsApp chats.

Existing Customers’ Pain Points:

Transactions required too much back and forth before completion, creating friction.

Trust was based on personal interactions rather than visible credibility markers.

Lack of a self-service way to browse or compare prices without contacting the client directly.

Potential Customers’ Pain Points:

Hesitation to trust an individual seller without proof of credibility.

Perception that WhatsApp as the only channel felt informal and risky.

Lack of transparency and reassurance compared to bigger exchanges and platforms

Design Non-Negotiables

From my conversations with Bobocoin, his customers, and even non-customers familiar with crypto and gift cards, it became clear that the platform’s value was not in outcompeting KuCoin or Binance on features, but in making trust and simplicity the edge. To keep the design focused, I set three non-negotiables that guided every decision:

Simplicity First: The flow had to remain as close as possible to the familiar WhatsApp “I want to buy” experience. The only change was showing the price upfront to cut down repetitive back-and-forth messages.

E-Commerce Behavior: The app needed to function like an online store where users could browse, see Bobocoin’s set price, and buy or sell directly without extra steps or complexity.

Trust at the center: From how prices were displayed to how policies and testimonials were surfaced, Every design choice had to reinforce credibility. One way this was done was with the use of familiar mental models.

Solutions

To address the seller’s inefficiencies and the customers’ trust concerns, the solution was designed around two core pillars: a professional landing page and a dedicated application for both the buyers and the seller. Together, they work to project credibility, reduce friction, and create a structured buying experience that scales beyond WhatsApp.

The Landing Page

The landing page acts as Bobocoin's professional digital front door, transforming how strangers perceive the brand compared to informal WhatsApp interactions. It functions as a trust bridge by showcasing credibility through testimonials, security features, and clear policies while presenting services in a straightforward way. The design guides users seamlessly from initial curiosity into the main application through strategic calls-to-action, effectively converting visitors into confident customers ready to transact.

What We Chose not to Build (read as, Trade-offs)

Real-time market graphs or analytics: Advanced traders often expect historical charts and comparative tools. These were excluded to keep the flow clean and focused on Bobocoin’s set rates.

Price comparison with external exchanges: Instead of benchmarking against global exchange rates, the platform emphasized transparency of Bobocoin’s own rates, making decisions straightforward for users.

My Learnings

This project taught me that simplicity often requires more discipline than complexity. By prioritizing trust and clarity over feature depth, I learned how to communicate trade-offs effectively and design around what truly matters. Speaking with both existing and potential users also reminded me that research beyond the current customer base is essential for building scalable solutions.
